And if there's any hope for any of us in this giant explosion in which we inhabit, then surely that's it: Intellect and romance triumphing over brute force and cynicism.

This is a piece I did in reaction to what I think is the best and most important pitch for a comic/illustrated novel I’ve heard in a long time. If you have never heard of Dean Trippe’s Lois Lane, Girl Reporter, then go here now and read this first:

Basically, Dean says it far better than I can, but Lois Lane does everything Superman does without his powers. This pitch, about an 11 year old Lois, who has found her calling in investigative journalism is heroic and inspiring to say the least. It’s sad that many people today still think that girls don’t read comics or that girl characters don’t sell or do well. Uh, hello! Anyone heard of The Hunger Games? Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Avatar, The Legend of Korra?

What I find more insulting is companies thinking that only young girls would be interested or should be interested in this. I’m a 31 year old man, and I would love to read this book. I could care less what gender or what age the characters are in a story, as long as the story is told well.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dean at Emerald City Comicon last week and he was the nicest, most intelligent guy you could ever meet, and not just because he believes that good stories about girls need to be told to give girls better role models. That just makes him a decent human being.

Basically, it’s like that phrase that was pointed out in another comic, Frank and Ernest in 1982, by Bob Thaves. He said, referring to Fred Astaire:

“Sure, he was great, but don’t forget that Ginger Rogers did everything that he did…only backwards and in heels.”

Pretty much. I hope you enjoy my little illustration for a book that may never be. I just might have to call on all the artists I know to do fan art for this as well.
